Question 1

How is the road distance between two cities calculated?

Accepted Answer

On the OpenStreetMap data for Romania, with the OSRM routing engine: for each pair we look for the fastest route for cars, in both directions. If another route is at most 3% slower but at least 10% shorter, we show that one. The start and end points are in the centre of each place.

Question 2

How accurate are the distances?

Accepted Answer

They are calculated on the roads on the map, so they may differ from your route: you start from a specific address, you may take another road, or there may be detours. The difference is usually a few kilometres.

Question 3

Why is the road distance longer than the straight-line distance?

Accepted Answer

Roads go around mountains, water and towns, so the route is longer than a straight line. For the city pairs in the calculator, the road is about 44% longer on average.

Question 4

How long does the trip actually take?

Accepted Answer

The time shown is an estimate for a car, without breaks or traffic, based on the road type and the speed limits on the map. Congestion, roadworks and stops can make it longer, and professional drivers also have their mandatory breaks.

Question 5

Do the routes use the Transfăgărășan or the Transalpina?

Accepted Answer

No. CNAIR closes the mountain sections of these two roads in the cold season, so we left them out, so that the distances apply all year round. When they are open, some routes across the mountains may be shorter that way.

Question 6

Can I calculate the distance between two villages or exact addresses?

Accepted Answer

The calculator covers the cities and towns of Romania, according to the SIRUTA register of the National Institute of Statistics; Sulina is missing, as it has no road to the rest of the country. For exact addresses, the FoiParcursAuto.ro app calculates routes on the map, directly in the trip sheet.

Question 7

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Accepted Answer

Multiply the distance by the consumption (litres per 100 km) and by the price per litre, then divide by 100. For example, 230 km × 6.5 l/100 km × 10.95 lei/l ÷ 100 = 163.70 lei. The calculator starts from today's national average price, which you can change.

Question 8

Can I use the distances for the trip sheet or for the expense report?

Accepted Answer

They help you estimate and check the kilometres, but the trip sheet records the trips made and the kilometres actually driven. For trips to another town, see also the travel order, with the expense report.
